Richmond, VA — A line of intensifying thunderstorms is expected to develop across parts of Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland through Monday evening, bringing the potential for damaging winds, isolated tornadoes, and hail.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, storms forming across the western Carolinas are gaining strength as they move eastward into regions with warmer temperatures and higher humidity. The affected zone stretches from northern North Carolina through central Virginia into parts of southern Maryland.

Forecasters are monitoring conditions closely, with a 60 percent chance that a Severe Thunderstorm Watch may be issued later this afternoon or evening. Wind gusts could reach 65 to 80 mph, with isolated tornadoes capable of producing wind speeds up to 95 mph. Hail up to 1.25 inches in diameter is also possible.

Residents in cities such as Greensboro, Raleigh, Richmond, and Washington, D.C., should remain alert as storm coverage is expected to increase between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday. Downed trees, power outages, and hazardous travel conditions are likely in the most impacted areas.

Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, monitor local alerts, and have a shelter plan ready in case warnings are issued.
