Binghamton, New York – Drivers across a large stretch of the Mid-Atlantic are being urged to use extreme caution Sunday as fast-moving snow squalls sweep from western New York through Pennsylvania and into Virginia, creating sudden whiteouts and dangerous road conditions within minutes.
According to the National Weather Service, multiple Snow Squall Warnings were issued Sunday morning for parts of western and central New York, central and western Pennsylvania, and southwest Virginia. These squalls are producing intense bursts of heavy snow, gusty winds up to 35 mph, and rapid drops in visibility to near zero as they race east at 30 to 50 mph.
In New York, warnings cover portions of Allegany, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Cattaraugus, and Wyoming counties, impacting travel on Interstates 86, 90, and 390 near communities such as Victor, Dansville, Olean, and Wellsville. Across Pennsylvania, snow squalls are affecting major corridors including the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Interstate 80, and Interstate 81, with hazardous conditions reported in Cambria, Somerset, Clearfield, Elk, McKean, and Potter counties.
Farther south, Snow Squall Warnings are in effect across parts of southwest Virginia, including Pulaski, Wythe, Bland, and Tazewell counties, impacting Interstates 77 and 81 near Wytheville and Dublin.
Officials stress that snow squalls can turn dry roads treacherous almost instantly. Drivers should slow down immediately, avoid sudden braking, and delay travel when possible. Warnings remain in effect through late morning, and additional squalls may develop as the system continues east.
