Baltimore, Md. – The first widespread winter storm of the season is set to move into the Mid-Atlantic late Monday night, bringing a dangerous mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to Maryland, Virginia, and eastern West Virginia. The National Weather Service warns that icy conditions will likely make for a hazardous Tuesday morning commute.

According to forecasters, precipitation will spread from southwest to northeast after midnight. Areas along the Mason-Dixon Line and higher terrain in western Maryland could see 2 to 4 inches of snow, while much of central Maryland and northern Virginia will experience a transition from snow to sleet and freezing rain before temperatures rise Tuesday morning.

Ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch are possible, especially along the Blue Ridge and Appalachian foothills. Major routes such as I-70, I-81, and I-66 may become slick, with the most hazardous conditions expected between 4 and 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, reduce speed, and check 511 travel updates before heading out. Conditions are expected to improve by midday Tuesday as precipitation changes to rain across southern areas.
