Annapolis, MD – As temperatures begin to fall across the Mid-Atlantic, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is urging homeowners in Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware to winterize their homes now to prevent damage and ensure safety through the cold months ahead.

NOAA officials say early-season cold snaps could bring frost and below-freezing temperatures to parts of the region in the coming weeks. Homeowners are encouraged to take preventive action while the weather remains mild.

Recommended steps to winterize your home include:

  • Inspecting chimneys and heating systems before heavy use.
  • Cleaning out gutters to prevent ice buildup and roof leaks.
  • Insulating attics and exposed pipes to reduce heat loss and prevent freezing.
  • Caulking and weather-stripping windows and doors to seal drafts.
  • Testing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with fresh batteries.
  • Stocking emergency supplies, including flashlights, blankets, and bottled water.

NOAA also reminds residents to check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable community members who may need help preparing for winter.
