According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, the system is expected to spread precipitation across the region beginning Friday evening and continuing overnight into Saturday. While rain will be the dominant precipitation type in southern portions of the state, colder air farther north will create a more hazardous mix in other areas.
Forecasters say snow is expected across northeastern Pennsylvania, while central Pennsylvania — including the Harrisburg region — could see a combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. This mixed precipitation setup raises the potential for slick roads, especially overnight and during the early Saturday morning hours.
Precipitation totals are forecast to range between 0.25 and 0.50 inches in many locations, with locally higher amounts possible in eastern Pennsylvania and parts of New Jersey. Despite the steady rainfall, no river flooding is expected at this time, according to the NWS.
The heaviest precipitation is anticipated overnight Friday, with conditions gradually improving from west to east Saturday morning as the system exits the region.
Drivers are urged to use caution, particularly in areas where freezing rain or sleet develops. Untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses could become icy quickly, even if surface temperatures hover near freezing.
