Binghamton, N.Y. – A sharp cold front diving through the Mid-Atlantic on Thursday is expected to bring widespread rain, with the heaviest downpours targeting upstate New York, particularly near the Chenango Valley, where totals could top an inch.
According to the National Weather Service’s Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, the highest probability for 1-inch rainfall amounts will center over central and southern New York. The broader region—from Pennsylvania to parts of Virginia—will likely see lighter totals ranging from a quarter to half an inch.
While the rain may briefly reduce visibility and create slick roads during the morning and evening commute, no river flooding is forecast with this system. Urban street flooding remains possible in low-lying or poorly drained areas, but no major waterway concerns are anticipated.
Travelers in Binghamton, Elmira, and along I-81 should be prepared for reduced speeds and wet pavement. Officials recommend checking road conditions before heading out Thursday afternoon.
Rain chances taper by early Friday, with cooler, drier air settling in behind the front. More advisories are not expected, but isolated heavy pockets could still prompt short-term alerts.
