Richmond, VA – A widespread round of light snow is creating slick roads across the Mid-Atlantic today, with Winter Weather Advisories in effect from southern Maryland through central and eastern Virginia, northeast North Carolina, and into portions of southeast West Virginia. The National Weather Service warns that even light accumulations may cause hazardous travel through tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, Maryland’s Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset, and Inland Worcester counties remain under an advisory until 7 p.m. Friday, where up to one inch of additional snow is expected. Similar totals are forecast for Lancaster, Middlesex, Northumberland, and Gloucester counties in eastern Virginia.
A broader advisory covering much of central, north central, east central, and south-central Virginia continues until 1 a.m. Saturday. Forecasters note that while snowfall amounts will remain around one inch, a trace of freezing drizzle is possible this evening, increasing the risk of icy patches on bridges and overpasses.
Farther south, Southampton (VA) and Northampton (NC) remain under an advisory until 1 p.m. Friday, where up to one-half inch of snow may accumulate before tapering off.
In the higher terrain, the National Weather Service in Blacksburg reports that Alleghany, Bath, and Rockbridge counties in Virginia, along with Eastern and Western Greenbrier counties in West Virginia, could see up to one inch of additional snow through 1 p.m. Friday. Roads and elevated surfaces are expected to become slick.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution during the Friday evening commute as temperatures fall and light precipitation continues. Road updates are available via 511 systems in all affected states.
