Richmond, Va. – Scattered thunderstorms could bring heavy rain and rising creeks to central and southern Virginia late Sunday, especially across the James and Potomac river basins.
According to the Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, storms are most likely between 4 and 10 p.m. with isolated rainfall totals reaching 2 inches. While sunshine dominates in the Delaware and Susquehanna basins further north, areas from central Virginia to southern Maryland should prepare for brief downpours and localized flooding.
Minor rises of one to two feet are expected on rivers, with sharper increases on small streams and creeks near strong thunderstorm cells. This includes areas around Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Charlottesville. Travel could be impacted by ponding on roads, especially during evening commutes.
Residents are advised to monitor local alerts, avoid driving through flooded roadways, and secure outdoor belongings ahead of sudden storms. No widespread river flooding is anticipated at this time.
Conditions will dry out overnight, but more isolated storms remain possible Monday.
