New York, NY – Gale-to-storm-force winds are hammering New England to the Mid-Atlantic today (Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025), with dangerous seas and visibility drops expected to continue into Monday, Oct. 13.

According to the National Weather Service offices in New York (OKX), Mount Holly (PHI), and Boston/Norton (BOX), as well as the Ocean Prediction Center, Storm Warnings remain in effect across key waterways: Long Island’s south shore bays, Peconic and Gardiners Bays, Long Island Sound, Rhode Island Sound, Block Island Sound, offshore zones south of New England and Long Island, New Jersey coastal waters, and Delaware Bay. Timelines vary, but most warnings extend through Monday, with end times ranging from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT Oct. 13.

Forecasts call for northeast winds 25–45 knots with widespread gusts 50–55 knots. Seas are extremely hazardous: 12–24 feet offshore (locally higher), 7–13 feet in sounds, and 3–6 feet in bays. The NWS warns storm-force winds and steep, breaking waves may capsize or damage vessels and sharply reduce visibility in rain and spray.

Impacts will be most severe from New York and Long Island east through Rhode Island and south into New Jersey and Delaware marine zones, including ferry routes and commercial/charter operations. Conditions gradually improve late Monday, but residual rough seas and strong northerlies may persist into Tuesday and beyond offshore.

Safety guidance: Mariners should remain in port, alter course, and secure vessels. If you must be on the water, wear life jackets, file a float plan, secure loose gear, and monitor VHF and NWS marine channels.
