Richmond, VA – More than 14 million people across Virginia and Maryland face a dangerous severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. Wednesday, with damaging winds and torrential rain threatening travel, utilities, and daily life from Roanoke to Washington, DC.
According to the US National Weather Service Blacksburg VA, scattered storms may produce wind gusts up to 70 mph, isolated large hail, and frequent lightning. The greatest risk of flash flooding is expected east of the Blue Ridge, where repeated downpours could overwhelm creeks and urban areas. The watch zone covers major highways including I-95, I-81, and I-64, with impacts reaching into schools, hospitals, and city centers such as Fredericksburg, Martinsville, and Hagerstown.
Travel could become hazardous this evening as fallen branches, debris, and rapidly rising water affect roads. Residents are urged to stay indoors when thunder roars, secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas. Power outages and school delays are possible if storms intensify.
This is one of the largest severe weather threats of the summer for the region, reminiscent of the widespread storms seen in July 2022. The severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. tonight. Additional warnings or alerts may follow if storms persist.
