Baltimore, MD – A sharp turn toward winter is expected across the Mid-Atlantic through Thanksgiving weekend as a cold front sweeps through, bringing periods of rain, gusty winds, and the chance for a brief wintry mix by Sunday. The holiday travel window could see slower commutes and scattered flight delays from Washington to Philadelphia as temperatures tumble behind the front.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Sterling, VA, and State College, PA, temperatures from November 28 through December 4 are likely to run below normal across the region, with highs mainly in the 30s and low 40s north of I-70. Normal late-November highs in this corridor average in the mid-40s to near 50, but Arctic air will hold daytime readings 10 degrees colder in some areas. The Climate Prediction Center also highlights above-normal precipitation, raising the odds for a chilly rain or light snow mix north of the Mason-Dixon Line late Sunday into Monday.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, untreated roads could become slick overnight Sunday as rain changes to wet snow across higher elevations. Winds gusting 25–35 mph may also hamper high-profile vehicles along I-81 and I-95.

Motorists returning from the holiday should plan extra travel time, monitor real-time advisories, and pack warm layers. Homeowners are encouraged to protect pipes and bring pets indoors as nighttime lows drop into the 20s.
