Wakefield, VA – The National Weather Service warns a significant coastal storm will impact southeastern Virginia and the lower Chesapeake Bay region this weekend, bringing heavy rain, flooding, and high winds through Sunday and Monday.

According to the NWS Wakefield office, moderate to major coastal flooding is expected along the Atlantic coast, the lower Chesapeake Bay, and surrounding tidal rivers on Sunday, when water levels will peak during high tide.

Wind gusts up to 55 mph are possible along the Virginia and Maryland Eastern Shore, with scattered power outages likely. The strongest winds will occur late Saturday night into Sunday, especially near the immediate coastline.

Rainfall totals between 1 and 3 inches are forecast, highest near the coast, which could cause isolated flash flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Forecasters urge residents to avoid travel during high tide periods, secure outdoor items, and prepare for potential power interruptions. The system is expected to move northward by late Monday as conditions gradually improve after the holiday.
