Richmond, VA – A powerful coastal storm is forecast to develop Friday, bringing a significant threat of flooding, heavy rain, and damaging winds to eastern Virginia and parts of the mid-Atlantic by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

Forecasters warn moderate to major coastal flooding is expected Sunday, especially along the Atlantic coast, the lower Chesapeake Bay, and nearby tidal rivers. Water levels could rise significantly during high tide, posing risks to low-lying areas and waterfront communities.

According to the Weather Service, wind gusts up to 55 mph are possible late Saturday night through Sunday. These strong winds could lead to isolated power outages and make travel hazardous along bridges and coastal routes.

Heavy rainfall is also a concern, with a slight risk of excessive rainfall Sunday and potential for flash flooding east of I-95. Rainfall totals could exceed several inches in the hardest-hit areas.

Today’s weather will remain dry and cool behind a cold front, with temperatures in the 60s and lows tonight dipping into the 40s and 50s. Patchy frost may develop in rural areas northwest of Richmond before the storm moves in.

Residents along the Virginia and North Carolina coasts are urged to prepare now for potential flooding, gusty winds, and travel disruptions.
