Baltimore, MD – Residents across Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware are in for a stunning nighttime display Tuesday as a Super Harvest Moon rises over the Mid-Atlantic, appearing up to 30% brighter and larger than a typical full moon.
According to astronomers, this event combines two celestial phenomena: a supermoon—when the Moon’s orbit brings it closest to Earth—and the Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the autumn equinox. The overlap makes this one of the brightest and most anticipated moons of the year.
The Moon reaches full illumination at 3:48 a.m. GMT (11:48 p.m. EDT Monday), but the most dramatic views will occur just after sunset Tuesday, when the moon rises in a golden-orange glow over the eastern horizon. This year’s event is particularly special—it’s only the 18th early-October Harvest Moon in the past 80 years.
Forecasters expect mostly clear skies across the region, giving skywatchers from Baltimore to Philadelphia to Dover an excellent chance to enjoy the spectacle. Experts recommend heading to open areas, parks, or waterfronts away from city lights for the clearest views.
