Washington, D.C. – Widespread rain and sleet will impact much of the Mid-Atlantic on Thursday, increasing runoff and raising river levels. The Potomac River region faces higher risks as frozen ground prevents water absorption.

According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, precipitation will generate more runoff than usual. Rivers in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia are rising faster than normal. While no minor flood stages are currently expected, some locations are approaching action stage.

The hardest-hit areas include parts of Virginia and West Virginia, where sleet and rain are intensifying runoff. Residents near rivers should monitor conditions closely.

Forecasters urge caution, especially in low-lying areas prone to flooding. Travel disruptions are possible due to icy road conditions and rising water levels.
