A developing low-pressure system is moving into the Mid-Atlantic region today, bringing a widespread round of rain that is expected to continue into Friday. According to the National Weather Service’s Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, rainfall will spread across much of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware, and surrounding areas as the system progresses eastward.

Temperatures across the region will remain warm enough to support all rain, with no wintry precipitation expected during this event. Forecast models indicate the heaviest rainfall totals will be focused across the northeastern portion of the region, where localized amounts may exceed one inch. Other areas will generally see moderate rainfall totals, which may lead to ponding on roads and reduced visibility during periods of steadier rain.

While widespread river flooding is not anticipated at this time, hydrologists are monitoring several river basins closely. A few forecast points are expected to rise to near or slightly above Action Stage, which is the level at which rivers begin to show noticeable impacts but remain below flood stage. These rises are typical with prolonged rainfall events and do not currently signal significant flooding concerns.

Officials stress that conditions can change depending on rainfall intensity and duration, particularly in areas with poor drainage or recent wet conditions. Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware, especially those living near streams and rivers that respond quickly to rainfall.

Motorists should also use caution during the rain event, as wet roadways and reduced visibility may create hazardous travel conditions, especially during peak commuting hours. The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the system and provide updates as new data becomes available through Friday.
