Baltimore, Maryland – Thunderstorms are dumping torrential rain across the Mid-Atlantic today, sending flash flood warnings into effect for millions from Virginia to New Jersey. Commuters in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Annapolis should prepare for rapidly rising water and road closures, with rainfall totals possibly reaching 4 inches by midnight.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Baltimore/Washington and the Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, a Flash Flood Watch remains in place from 2 p.m. through midnight Monday for most of central Maryland, northern Virginia, and eastern Pennsylvania. The heaviest downpours are expected in slow-moving storms, with rainfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour likely in some neighborhoods.

Cities including Gaithersburg, Rockville, Arlington, Frederick, and Ellicott City are under a moderate risk for flash flooding. Over 3.35 inches have already fallen in Ellicott City, Maryland, with reports of 3+ inches from Harrisburg, PA, and parts of Virginia overnight. Forecasters warn that sharp rises are likely on smaller rivers and creeks, making travel hazardous and increasing the threat of water rescues.

Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads, secure outdoor belongings, and move to higher ground if water levels rise. Power outages and road closures are possible this evening. Stay weather-aware, charge electronic devices, and check local alerts before venturing out.

Heavy rain is expected to taper overnight, but more advisories may be issued as rivers respond to runoff. Flash flood watches remain in effect through early Tuesday in some areas.
