Richmond, VA – A surge of arctic air is set to bring the coldest temperatures of the season to Virginia beginning Sunday, with dangerously low wind chills expected to persist into early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, bitter cold air expanding from the Northern Plains will push into the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast on Sunday. Temperatures across Virginia are forecast to fall sharply during the day, with some areas seeing readings 20 to 30 degrees below normal by Sunday night.

Strong northwest winds of 20 to 35 mph will combine with the cold air to drive wind chill values down to the single digits and near zero statewide, with colder readings possible in higher elevations west of the Blue Ridge. Forecasters warn that exposed skin could develop frostbite in a short period of time under these conditions.

The cold air mass may also challenge daily temperature records, particularly Sunday night into Monday morning. Afternoon highs Sunday are expected to remain unusually cold, with little daytime warming as the arctic air deepens.

Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and ensure pets and livestock are protected from the cold. Those traveling should carry winter safety kits, as the rapid temperature drop could cause refreezing on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Below-average temperatures are expected to linger into the start of the week before gradually moderating. Residents are encouraged to stay updated with local forecasts and cold weather advisories.
