MARQUETTE, Mich. – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop over Michigan’s south-central and eastern Upper Peninsula this afternoon, with heavy rain, gusty winds, and possible hail posing travel and outdoor hazards. The National Weather Service warns the most intense storms could form east of Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie through the evening hours.
According to the NWS Marquette office, the severe risk includes cities such as Escanaba, Munising, and Newberry, with scattered storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts over 60 mph. Drivers along U.S. 2 and M-28 should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, including low visibility from downpours.
Wednesday brings a break in the active weather, with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 60s to upper 70s. Warmer air returns Thursday into Friday, but by the end of the week, scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely to redevelop.
Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts this afternoon and avoid outdoor activities when storms approach. Warnings remain in effect until late tonight, with updates expected as conditions evolve.
