Cass County, MI – A woman was injured when her SUV overturned after swerving to avoid a deer in Cass County, Michigan, on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred around 7:39 p.m. near the intersection of Decatur Road and Fosdick Street in Volinia Township.
According to Cass County Sheriff Richard J. Behnke, the 31-year-old Lawrence, Michigan, resident was traveling westbound on Fosdick Street when a deer suddenly appeared in her path. In an attempt to avoid a collision, she swerved, causing her vehicle to lose control, ascend an embankment, and overturn. The SUV came to a stop in a bean field on the north side of the roadway.
Sheriff Behnke reported that the driver was able to extract herself from the overturned vehicle and was subsequently transported to Borgess Lee Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. It was noted that seatbelts were worn at the time of the crash, and neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have been factors in the accident.
Assistance at the scene was provided by the Wayne Township Fire Department and SMCAS Ambulance Service. The crash serves as a reminder of the dangers of sudden wildlife encounters on rural roads and the importance of remaining vigilant while driving.
