Marquette, MI – Lake effect snow is set to blanket parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula beginning Sunday night, with snowfall totals reaching up to 8 inches in higher elevations near Marquette.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. Sunday through 2 p.m. Monday for Baraga and Marquette Counties. Heavy lake effect snow is expected to fall at rates of up to 1 inch per hour, particularly in the higher terrain south and west of Marquette.

Hazardous driving conditions are likely across Marquette, Gwinn, L’Anse, and surrounding areas as winds gusting up to 35 mph reduce visibility. The Monday morning commute is expected to be difficult due to snow accumulation and slick roads.

Additional advisories have been issued for Luce, Alger, Schoolcraft, Houghton, Gogebic, and Ontonagon Counties, where snow totals between 3 and 7 inches are forecast. The strongest winds are expected near the Lake Superior shoreline.

Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution while traveling. Officials recommend allowing extra travel time and keeping emergency kits in vehicles.

Snowfall will begin to taper off by Monday afternoon as the system weakens, though lingering flurries may continue in lake-effect zones into the evening.
