Gaylord, MI – Northern Lower Michigan is bracing for hazardous weather today as snow and strong winds are expected to create dangerous travel conditions on US-2 and other major routes. Snowfall accumulations of 4 to 7 inches, with localized higher amounts, are forecast through tonight. Wind gusts of up to 40 mph will reduce visibility and make roads slippery.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the worst conditions are expected from midday into the afternoon, as snowfall rates may exceed 1 inch per hour. Visibility will drop rapidly during these periods, posing a significant risk to drivers. Travelers are urged to avoid unnecessary trips and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies.
Bitter cold temperatures, with wind chills as low as -25°F, will persist through the morning, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Residents should wear layers, hats, and gloves when outdoors and limit skin exposure to these dangerous temperatures. Pets should also be kept indoors.
The forecast for Thursday shows continued snow showers with additional accumulations under half an inch. Highs will remain in the teens, and wind chills will stay well below freezing. By Friday, conditions are expected to improve, with partly sunny skies and temperatures reaching the upper teens.
Prepare for difficult travel today and tonight, and monitor updates from the National Weather Service for changes to the forecast.
