Gaylord, MI – Lake-effect snow showers will intensify across northern Michigan tonight and continue through Monday morning, potentially creating hazardous travel as strong winds combine with quick bursts of accumulating snow. The National Weather Service in Gaylord says localized snow totals of 3 inches or more are likely, with isolated amounts over 6 inches north of the Mackinac Bridge.

According to the Weather Service, the heaviest snow is expected from late tonight through Monday morning, particularly across eastern Upper Michigan near Trout Lake, Whitefish Point, Paradise and the Soo, where persistent bands may set up. Widespread totals of 3–6 inches are forecast north of the bridge, while 1–3 inches are possible from Gaylord to Grayling and down toward Cadillac.

Forecasters say the primary concern is not just accumulation but visibility dropping rapidly within stronger bands as winds gust 25 to 40 mph. Blowing snow and crosswinds could create difficult travel conditions on I-75, M-123, US-2 and M-32, especially during early Sunday and Monday morning commutes.

Localized slick roads, sudden white-outs, and shifting snow bands may affect travel across northwest lower Michigan, though accumulations there are expected to be lighter.

Drivers are urged to use caution, especially in open areas where blowing snow may quickly obscure lanes. Travelers heading across the Mackinac Bridge or toward the eastern U.P. should monitor updates closely through Monday morning as conditions may change rapidly.
