Grand Rapids, MI – Drivers in parts of West Michigan should prepare for hazardous travel conditions late tonight into Friday as snow, strong winds, and falling temperatures move into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Lake and Mason counties from 10 p.m. Thursday through 1 p.m. Friday. The advisory includes the cities of Ludington and Baldwin, along the Lake Michigan shoreline and inland areas.
Forecasters say 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected, with locally higher amounts possible, especially in areas affected by lake-enhanced snowfall. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility, particularly overnight and during the Friday morning commute.
The timing could worsen road conditions. Officials warn that rainfall earlier Thursday followed by rapidly dropping temperatures may cause roads to freeze quickly, creating slick and icy surfaces. Snow-covered and icy roads, combined with gusty winds, are expected to make travel difficult at times.
In addition to travel concerns, strong winds may bring down tree branches and could lead to isolated power outages, especially in areas with weaker infrastructure or saturated ground conditions.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and be cautious on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. Visibility may change rapidly in heavier snow bands.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve Friday afternoon as snowfall tapers off and winds ease.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and road conditions throughout the day.
