Grand Rapids, Michigan – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across portions of west Michigan as accumulating snow is expected to significantly impact travel from late Thursday night through early Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, the advisory covers southwest and west central Michigan, including Mason, Lake, Oceana, Newaygo, Muskegon, Ottawa, Kent, Allegan, and Van Buren counties.

Forecasters say total snow accumulations between 4 and 6 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible, especially west of U.S. 131. Snow is forecast to begin around 10 p.m. Thursday and continue through 7 a.m. EST Saturday.

The National Weather Service warns that travel could be very difficult, particularly during the Friday morning and evening commutes, when snowfall rates may reduce visibility and create slick road conditions. Untreated roads and bridges are expected to become snow-covered, increasing the risk of accidents.

The advisory affects a broad area of west Michigan, including the lakeshore and inland communities. Cities within the advisory area include Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Holland, Grand Haven, Ludington, South Haven, Fremont, Hart, Baldwin, and Jenison.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution, especially during peak travel hours. Those with flexible schedules may want to delay non-essential travel until conditions improve.

No ice accumulation or mixed precipitation was indicated in the advisory, but persistent snowfall over an extended period is expected to create hazardous conditions.
