Traverse City, MI – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for northwest Michigan, as lake-effect snow continues to make travel difficult through Monday evening into early Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Gaylord.
The advisory covers Leelanau, Benzie, Grand Traverse, and Manistee Counties, where forecasters report snow accumulations up to one inch Sunday evening, followed by a second round of heavier snow Monday morning through Monday night. The Manistee County shoreline is expected to receive 3 to 6 inches, with locally higher totals near the city of Manistee.
Officials warn that roads, bridges, and overpasses will likely become slick and hazardous, particularly during the Monday morning and evening commutes. Visibility may drop quickly within lake-effect snow bands, with conditions varying from heavy snow to clear skies just a few miles apart.
Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra travel time, especially along US-31 and M-22. Pedestrians should also use caution, as icy sidewalks and driveways could increase the risk of slips and falls.
