Grand Rapids, Michigan – Drivers across West Michigan are facing another round of slick roads as accumulating snow and gusty winds continue to affect travel through Thursday morning. Snow-covered pavement and reduced visibility are expected to create hazardous conditions during both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes, especially along major corridors like I-96, US-31, and M-45.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Thursday for much of southwest and west central Michigan. Areas closer to Lake Michigan, including Muskegon, Oceana, Mason, Ottawa, Allegan, and Van Buren counties, could see an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow. Farther inland, including Kent, Barry, Kalamazoo, Lake, and Newaygo counties, snowfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 3 inches.
Winds are forecast to increase Wednesday afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph near the lakeshore. That combination may lead to areas of blowing snow, briefly reducing visibility on open roads and bridges. MDOT crews are expected to remain active, but untreated roads and secondary streets could remain slick.
Residents are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid non-essential travel during heavier bursts of snow. The advisory remains in place through Thursday morning, and additional updates may be issued if conditions worsen overnight.
