Marquette, Michigan – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, with wet snow expected to create slippery road conditions overnight into early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, snowfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected across Baraga and Marquette counties, including the cities of Marquette, L’Anse, and Gwinn. A heavier band of snow may develop across the Michigamme Highlands, where localized accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are possible.

The advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Thursday until 7 a.m. EST Friday. Snowfall will be wet and dense, which can quickly accumulate on road surfaces, especially during overnight hours when temperatures remain favorable for accumulation.

The primary impact will be slippery and snow-covered roads, particularly during the Friday morning commute. Even moderate snowfall rates could reduce traction on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Visibility may also briefly drop during heavier bursts of snow in higher terrain.

While widespread power outages are not anticipated, motorists are urged to use caution, slow down, and allow extra travel time Friday morning. Conditions may vary significantly over short distances, especially near higher elevations in the interior west and central Upper Peninsula.

Snowfall intensity is expected to diminish by mid-morning Friday as the system moves east, with improving travel conditions later in the day.

Drivers are encouraged to check local road conditions before traveling and remain alert for rapidly changing winter weather conditions overnight.
