Marquette, MI – A prolonged and potentially dangerous stretch of winter weather is expected across northern Michigan this weekend, with significant ice accumulations forecast to impact power, travel, and daily routines.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening for Alger, Luce, Delta, and both Northern and Southern Schoolcraft counties. Areas around Escanaba, Munising, and Newberry could see ice totals between one-tenth and one-half inch, with the heaviest accumulation likely Friday night into early Saturday.

Further east, the National Weather Service in Gaylord has extended the Winter Storm Watch for Chippewa, Mackinac, Emmet, Cheboygan, and Presque Isle counties, where sleet up to 2 inches and ice nearing a half inch may develop. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph are also expected, increasing the risk of tree damage and widespread power outages across the region.

Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during this period, particularly Friday evening and Saturday morning. Residents should prepare emergency kits with essentials, including blankets, flashlights, food, and water.

Utility companies are advising customers to monitor outage alerts and avoid downed lines. Forecast updates are expected through the weekend.
