Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan remains under a Winter Storm Warning until 7 a.m. Sunday, with heavy lake-effect snow expected to bring accumulations of up to a foot in some areas, as snowfall intensifies at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour in the most intense bands.
According to the National Weather Service, ongoing snow bands will continue to impact parts of the Northern Lower and Eastern Upper Peninsulas through Sunday morning. Areas such as Chippewa, Cheboygan, and Charlevoix counties remain at risk for significant snowfall, particularly near major highways like M-68 and M-33. While the heaviest snowfalls are expected in localized areas, regions outside the snow bands may only receive a few inches.
Forecasters warn that rapid changes in visibility, combined with slick road conditions, could make travel dangerous. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and ensure emergency supplies, such as flashlights, food, and water, are available in vehicles.
This lake-effect snowstorm is being driven by cold air moving over the Great Lakes, fueling the potential for rapid accumulation and hazardous driving conditions. The storm is expected to taper off early Sunday morning, though residual impacts may linger in affected areas.
Drivers should remain cautious and allow extra time for travel.
