Gaylord, MI – A winter storm warning is in effect for Northern Michigan starting Tuesday night, with snowfall intensifying Wednesday into Thursday. Lake effect snow could bring accumulations of up to 18 inches in localized areas, particularly along the I-75 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord, the snowbelt regions northwest and north of the state will be hit hardest. Winds reaching 30 mph will create blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility and making travel hazardous, especially on I-75 and nearby roadways. Temperatures will plummet, with highs dropping into the teens by Wednesday.

Snow showers are expected to begin tonight with a new accumulation of up to 5 inches by Wednesday morning. Heavier bands will persist into Thursday, potentially bringing totals of 12 to 18 inches in isolated areas. Travelers should avoid non-essential trips during this period and keep an emergency kit in their vehicles if driving is necessary.

Beyond Thursday, conditions remain cold with scattered snow showers possible through the weekend. Friday and Saturday will see highs near 20°F with overnight lows dipping into the single digits.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and prepare for potential disruptions. Stay informed by checking forecasts at weather.gov/gaylord and follow road conditions on Michigan.gov/roadconditions.
