Marquette, Michigan – Heavy snow and ice continue to hammer the Upper Peninsula this morning, with up to 7 inches of additional accumulation expected before 7 p.m. Friday, creating hazardous road conditions for both the morning and evening commutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Keweenaw, Houghton, Baraga, Marquette, Iron and Dickinson counties until 7 p.m. EST, and for Menominee County until noon CST. Keweenaw and Northern Houghton counties can expect 4 to 7 more inches of snow. Marquette and Baraga counties may see up to 8 inches in higher terrain, along with around 0.10 inches of ice in eastern Dickinson and southern Marquette counties. Menominee County could pick up 3 inches of snow and sleet, mainly north of US-2, with similar ice totals.
Ice buildup may weigh down tree limbs and power lines.
Travel along US-41 from Houghton through Marquette and M-28 across Baraga County will likely become snow-covered and slick. Slippery stretches are expected on I-41 near Iron Mountain and along US-2 in Menominee County, especially before midday.
What residents should do now: Delay nonessential travel and keep emergency supplies in vehicles in case of road closures or power outages.
Snow and mixed precipitation taper west to east late Friday evening, but icy road conditions may persist into the overnight hours. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through the stated expiration times.
