Grand Rapids, MI – A powerful winter storm continues to intensify across western Michigan today, bringing heavy lake-effect snow and dangerous travel conditions from Mason to Muskegon and Oceana counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday, with total snowfall estimated between 4 and 12 inches, and locally higher amounts possible. Communities along the Lake Michigan shoreline, particularly from Grand Haven through Muskegon to Montague, are expected to see the highest snow rates.

Forecasters say snow intensity will increase through the afternoon as lake-effect bands strengthen, reducing visibility and rapidly coating roads. According to the NWS, travel could become very difficult to impossible, with the most dangerous conditions expected during the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes.

Roads may become slick or snow-covered quickly as heavier bands push inland. Motorists are urged to prepare for sudden drops in visibility, drifting snow, and slow-moving traffic across US-31, M-120, and other key corridors.

The storm is expected to taper off by early Tuesday morning, though lingering snow showers may continue along the lakeshore.

Officials advise drivers to avoid unnecessary travel when possible. Those who must be on the road should keep an emergency kit—including water, food, and a flashlight—in their vehicle in case of delays or road closures.

Residents should monitor updated forecasts as conditions continue to evolve across western Michigan.
