Grand Rapids, MI – A powerful winter storm is set to impact western Michigan beginning this evening, bringing heavy snow and strong winds to the region. Drivers along I-96, I-94, and other major highways should prepare for treacherous conditions, including rapidly falling visibility and icy roads.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm will begin at 5 p.m. today and last through early Friday morning. Snowfall totals are expected to range between 4 and 10 inches, with localized higher amounts possible. Wind gusts could reach up to 50 mph, leading to potential power outages and downed tree branches.
Hazardous travel conditions are expected during the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Snow squalls will create near-whiteout conditions, and lake effect snow will intensify overnight. Communities in Muskegon, Kent, and Ottawa Counties are likely to see the heaviest accumulations, while areas along Lake Michigan could face additional challenges from wind-driven snowdrifts.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and keep emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water, in their vehicles if driving is unavoidable. Power outages may occur, so households should ensure they have backup lighting and charged devices.
The storm will taper off early Friday, but cold air and blowing snow could extend travel difficulties into the weekend. Stay updated by following local weather reports and advisories.
