Grand Rapids, MI – A winter storm warning is in effect for portions of southwest and west-central Michigan from Wednesday evening through Friday morning, with strong winds and heavy snow expected to create dangerous travel conditions. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph, especially near the lakeshore, accompanied by snowfall totaling up to 10 inches in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will bring snow squalls and reduced visibility, particularly along major roadways like I-96, US-31, and US-127. Motorists are urged to exercise caution as blowing snow could make travel hazardous, especially during Thursday’s morning and evening commutes. Scattered power outages are also possible due to the combination of strong winds and heavy snow on tree limbs and power lines.
By Wednesday night, snow showers and gusty winds will intensify across the region. Conditions will remain dangerous through Thursday, with temperatures dropping into the low 30s. Thursday night could see an additional 2 inches of snow accumulation as winds continue to gust up to 38 mph.
The storm is expected to ease by Friday, with partly cloudy skies returning and a high near 29 degrees. However, the cold weather will persist into the weekend, with Saturday’s forecast showing highs in the mid-30s under partly sunny skies.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, keep flashlights and emergency supplies ready, and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. Those commuting should plan for extra time and check for road closures or delays.
