Marquette, MI – A prolonged winter storm will bring snow, ice, and high winds across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula beginning Sunday morning, with road conditions expected to deteriorate significantly through Monday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, winter weather advisories are now in effect across nine Upper Peninsula counties, including Marquette, Delta, Gogebic, Ontonagon, and Schoolcraft. The first impacts will begin as early as 5 a.m. EDT Sunday in western areas, with the advisory extending until 2 p.m. EDT Monday in some regions.

Snow totals are expected to range from 3 to 7 inches in most counties, with localized ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch, particularly in Ontonagon and Gogebic Counties. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph in places like Baraga County, further reducing visibility and creating hazardous travel conditions.

Communities such as Ironwood, Escanaba, Gladstone, and Newberry should prepare for dangerous road conditions, especially during the Monday morning commute.

Drivers are urged to reduce speed, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall hours. Local emergency management agencies advise checking with Michigan DOT for real-time updates on road closures and conditions.

This late March system reflects an ongoing trend of lingering winter weather in the U.P., with additional cold expected into early next week.
