Gaylord, MI – A major winter storm is intensifying across northern Michigan Sunday night, bringing a dangerous combination of freezing rain, heavy snow, and powerful winds that will create blizzard-like conditions and hazardous travel through Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the storm will begin with a period of icing Sunday evening, especially from the Tip of the Mitt northward, before transitioning to heavy snow overnight as colder air moves in. Snowfall will continue through Monday, with the heaviest accumulation expected late tonight through Monday morning.

Forecast snowfall totals range from 6 to 10 inches across parts of northern Lower Michigan, with higher totals possible across eastern Upper Michigan, including areas near Sault Ste. Marie and Whitefish Point. Some localized areas could see more than a foot of snow where lake enhancement develops.

In addition to snow, strong winds will significantly worsen impacts. Wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph are expected tonight into Monday, especially along the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron shorelines. These winds will lead to blowing and drifting snow, sharply reduced visibility, and the potential for downed trees and sporadic power outages.

Ice accumulations from early freezing rain may coat roads and power lines before snowfall begins, increasing the risk for treacherous road conditions and infrastructure damage. Travel is expected to be dangerous to near impossible at times, particularly overnight and during the Monday morning commute.

The National Weather Service urges residents to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for possible power outages, and ensure vehicles are stocked with winter emergency supplies. Those living along the lakeshores should also be aware of rapidly changing conditions and strong winds.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Monday into Monday night, though lingering lake-effect snow and slick roads may persist.
