Marquette, MI – A significant winter storm is set to impact Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, bringing up to 15 inches of snow, freezing rain, and strong winds through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Tuesday night through Thursday morning for central Upper Michigan, including Baraga, Marquette, Alger, Luce, Iron, Dickinson, Delta, and Schoolcraft counties. Snowfall totals between 4 and 12 inches are expected, with the highest accumulations in Marquette County’s higher elevations. Ice accumulations up to 0.05 inches and wind gusts reaching 40 mph near the Great Lakes shores could further worsen conditions.

Another Winter Storm Watch is in place for Gogebic, Keweenaw, Northern Houghton, Ontonagon, and Southern Houghton counties from Tuesday evening through late Wednesday night. These areas could see 4 to 10 inches of snow, with the heaviest snowfall south and east of the region. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, creating areas of blowing and drifting snow.

Travel conditions are expected to become hazardous, particularly during Wednesday’s morning and evening commutes. Blowing snow may reduce visibility, making roadways treacherous.

Residents are advised to monitor forecasts and prepare for dangerous travel conditions. The storm could lead to delays, school closures, and potential power outages due to heavy snow and ice accumulation. Stay updated with the latest alerts from local authorities and the National Weather Service.
