Marquette, Michigan – Thick wildfire smoke continues to blanket Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, triggering an air quality alert that remains in effect through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, smoke from Canadian wildfires is reducing visibility and pushing AQI values into the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range today and Saturday. Relief may arrive Sunday as a shifting wind pattern clears skies.

Daytime highs will stay in the mid to upper 70s with otherwise quiet weather. Residents near Lake Superior may see slightly cooler lows tonight, dipping into the 40s.

Officials recommend limiting outdoor activity, especially for children, older adults, and anyone with respiratory conditions. Keeping windows closed and using air purifiers is advised.

Conditions should improve Sunday as smoke dissipates, but occasional haze may linger into early next week.
