Sault Ste. Marie, MI — A significant winter storm continues to impact Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, bringing dangerous mixed precipitation to Chippewa and Mackinac counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday for Western and Central Chippewa, Southeast Chippewa, and both Eastern and Western Mackinac counties. Residents can expect additional snow and sleet accumulations of up to two inches, with ice buildup ranging from 0.2 to 0.4 inches across the region.

Travel conditions remain extremely hazardous, with roads potentially becoming impassable. The accumulation of ice on power lines and trees increases the risk of widespread power outages and tree damage, particularly in rural areas of Chippewa and Mackinac.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is essential, the National Weather Service recommends carrying extra food, water, and a flashlight in vehicles.

This storm arrives amid late-season cold, with conditions more typical of January than late March. Ice buildup on elevated surfaces and bridges may linger into Monday morning, even after precipitation ends.

Stay tuned to local alerts and emergency management updates for further guidance and road condition changes.
