Benton Harbor, Michigan – Drivers across southwest Michigan should plan for slower travel and slick roads early Wednesday as accumulating snow spreads across the region overnight and peaks during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service office serving northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday for portions of southwest Michigan. Snowfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected across Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, Branch, and Hillsdale counties, with steady accumulation developing before daybreak.
Communities including Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Niles, Dowagiac, Coldwater, and Hillsdale are likely to see snow-covered roads during the busiest travel hours. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads will become slippery as snowfall continues through midmorning. Even main routes such as I-94, US-31, and M-51 could see reduced speeds during heavier bursts of snow.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Checking the Michigan 511 system before heading out is recommended, especially for early commuters and school transportation routes.
Snow tapers off late Wednesday morning, but slick spots may linger into midday. No additional accumulation is expected after the advisory expires, though travelers should remain alert for lingering impacts through the afternoon.
