Marquette, Mich. – Swimmers and boaters along the Lake Superior shoreline in Marquette and Alger Counties are being urged to stay out of the water Monday as life-threatening waves and rip currents build through the evening. The National Weather Service warns of high swim risk conditions, especially near piers, break walls, and exposed beaches.
According to the NWS Marquette office, dangerous surf will impact Middle Bay near Presque Isle, Little Presque Isle, McCarty’s Cove, Au Train Bay, and popular areas within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore including Grand Sable Dunes and Miners Beach. Exposed sections of Grand Marais Harbor are also at risk. Waves and currents are expected to remain hazardous until late Monday night.
Officials caution beachgoers to avoid entering the water and to steer clear of structures like jetties, which can intensify currents. Even experienced swimmers could be quickly pulled offshore.
Inland, conditions remain calmer. The Upper Peninsula will see clearing skies with highs in the upper 60s Monday and low 70s by Tuesday. Patchy frost is possible tonight in the interior west before a warmer trend builds midweek. Rain and thunderstorms are expected to return Wednesday.
Warnings for dangerous waves remain in effect through Monday evening. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions persist.
