Escanaba, Michigan – A potent winter system could glaze roads with up to a quarter-inch of ice and dump as much as 8 inches of snow across central Upper Michigan by Wednesday evening, threatening power lines and major highways during peak travel times.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Tuesday night through Wednesday evening for Alger, Delta, Luce and Schoolcraft counties. Forecasters warn that heavy mixed precipitation will develop after midnight Tuesday, with snow totals between 4 and 8 inches and ice accumulation up to 0.25 inches. Wind gusts may reach 40 mph, leading to blowing snow and additional stress on trees and power infrastructure.
Travel along U.S. 2 from Escanaba to Manistique, M-28 near Munising and M-77 through Seney could become snow-covered or ice-coated before the Wednesday morning commute. Isolated power outages are possible, especially where ice weighs down lines and branches.
Residents should charge devices, secure loose outdoor items and avoid non-essential travel during peak icing. Conditions may worsen quickly overnight Tuesday, and additional warnings could replace the watch as confidence in snow and ice totals increases.
