GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Light to moderate snow continues across western Michigan this evening, with accumulations expected to reach up to 5 inches by 7 a.m. Tuesday. The system is making for hazardous travel in Lake and Newaygo counties as snow-covered and slick roads persist into the Tuesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until early Tuesday for the region, including the cities of Baldwin, Fremont, and Newaygo. Snow bands will gradually diminish overnight but may briefly intensify along U.S. 131 and M-37 before tapering toward sunrise.
Drivers should plan for slower travel on untreated or secondary roads, where snow will compact into ice as temperatures dip into the upper 20s. The Michigan Department of Transportation warns that bridges and overpasses will be especially slick through early Tuesday.
Motorists are advised to reduce speed, increase following distance, and allow extra time for morning travel. Those heading out before dawn should clear snow from headlights and windshields and check Michigan.gov/Drive or 511 for road updates.
The snow will wind down early Tuesday, leaving behind partly cloudy skies and a colder, breezy day ahead.
