Detroit, Michigan – Brutal summer heat and possible thunderstorms will slam southeast Michigan Tuesday, bringing health risks and travel headaches to millions.

An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for Genesee, Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties until 8 p.m. Tuesday, with heat index values reaching 105°F. According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, the combination of temperatures near 94°F and oppressive humidity will make outdoor conditions dangerous—especially along major corridors like I-75 and I-94.

Thunderstorm chances increase Tuesday afternoon, with isolated downpours and gusty winds possible after 2 p.m.. Brief but intense rainfall may flood low-lying roads and slow evening commutes.

Residents should:

  • Stay indoors with air conditioning
  • Avoid strenuous activity between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Never leave children or pets in vehicles, even briefly
  • Check on neighbors, especially seniors or those without AC
  • Visit cooling centers if needed (contact local emergency management for locations)

This is the first Extreme Heat Warning of the season for Metro Detroit and echoes similar heatwaves from late June 2021.

Looking ahead, rain and storm chances rise sharply through midweek, with relief coming by Thursday as highs fall back into the mid-80s. The NWS says scattered showers may persist into Friday, though heat indices will drop below 90°.

⚠️ Heat warnings remain active Tuesday. Expect possible severe weather impacts through Friday. Watch for updates.
