Ann Arbor, Michigan – Michigan’s first taste of winter is on the doorstep, with rain changing to snow late Saturday night into Sunday morning and temperatures plunging by early next week. The National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac reports that a cold front sweeping across the state will usher in the first measurable snowfall of the season for parts of southeast Michigan.

According to the NWS, the rain-to-snow transition will begin Saturday night, with the best chance of light accumulation north and west of Detroit, including Ann Arbor, Howell, and Flint. However, borderline freezing temperatures may limit how much snow sticks to the still-warm ground. By Sunday morning, patchy slush or icy spots could develop on untreated roads, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

Forecasters say confidence remains low on where the heaviest precipitation will fall, but the bigger story will be the sharp temperature drop. By Monday morning, lows could reach around 20°F, with wind chills near 10°F—making for the coldest air of the season so far. Daytime highs will struggle to reach the 30s Monday before a slow warm-up Tuesday.

Local police and road agencies urge drivers to slow down, increase following distances, and allow extra time for weekend travel as the first snow arrives. Residents should secure outdoor items, protect pets, and prepare for a hard freeze early next week.
