Marquette, Michigan – Dangerous conditions are building over Lake Superior Tuesday evening as strong north winds whip up fall gales and large waves across the Upper Great Lakes. The National Weather Service in Marquette has issued a Gale Warning from 5 p.m. Tuesday through 8 a.m. Wednesday, covering offshore waters between Manitou Island, Marquette, and Grand Marais.

According to the weather service, sustained north winds of 15 to 25 knots with gusts up to 35 knots will drive waves of 6 to 9 feet, creating perilous conditions for small craft and larger vessels alike. Mariners are strongly advised to remain in port or seek protected harbors until winds subside early Wednesday.

The most hazardous conditions are expected this evening and overnight, when waves will peak and visibility could drop in intermittent showers and blowing spray. According to the U.S. Coast Guard and local emergency managers, operators on Lake Superior’s north-central routes should secure gear, avoid nighttime crossings, and prepare for rapidly changing weather through early Wednesday.

Winds are forecast to ease before sunrise Wednesday, though lingering swells will keep nearshore waters choppy into mid-morning. Another system could bring renewed gusts late Thursday as the pattern remains active across the Upper Peninsula.
