DETROIT, Michigan – With Thanksgiving travel approaching, Michigan officials are urging drivers to prepare vehicles now for winter weather and long-distance holiday trips. From Detroit to Grand Rapids, motorists are being reminded that early maintenance and safety planning are key to avoiding breakdowns and dangerous road conditions once snow and ice return later this month.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, early November is the best time to inspect tires, test batteries, check antifreeze levels, and replace worn wipers. Every vehicle should also carry a winter emergency kit — including a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, bottled water, snacks, and traction materials such as sand or kitty litter.

Drivers traveling I-94, I-75, and U.S. 131 during Thanksgiving week should expect busy highways and shifting weather between the Lower Peninsula and the U.P. “Winter storms can develop quickly here, especially near the lakes,” a MDOT spokesperson said. “A little preparation now helps drivers stay safe once conditions turn.” Officials recommend keeping at least half a tank of gas, packing extra layers, and checking Michigan.gov/Drive for real-time road and plow updates.

With holiday travel expected to surge statewide, MDOT emphasizes that early readiness will help reduce roadside emergencies and keep traffic moving safely across Michigan as winter driving season officially begins.
