Michigan – Snowflakes thicken against a dim winter sky as cold air presses inland from Lake Michigan, setting the stage for a long stretch of hazardous travel. What begins as light snow quickly turns steadier, with roads growing slick and visibility dropping as winter weather intensifies.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from late tonight through Saturday morning. Snow totals of 4 to 6 inches are expected across much of southwest Lower Michigan, with the heaviest snowfall west of U.S. 131. Travel impacts are likely during both the Friday morning and evening commutes.
In Grand Rapids, snow becomes steadier overnight and continues through Friday, coating city streets, highways, and neighborhood roads. I-196, U.S. 131, and M-6 are expected to see snow-covered lanes, especially during peak travel hours. Even brief lulls may not improve conditions, as cold pavement allows snow to stick quickly.
Saturday remains active with additional snow showers and gusty winds. Highs struggle in the mid-20s, limiting melting and increasing the risk of flash freezing after sunset. By Sunday, lighter snow continues with colder air settling in, keeping roads slick well into the weekend.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during heavier snow bands. Residents are urged to dress in layers, charge devices, and prepare for prolonged winter conditions.
Looking ahead, colder air deepens early next week. Wind chills may plunge between 15 and 25 degrees below zero by Tuesday, keeping winter firmly in control.
