Newberry, MI – Drivers in Michigan’s eastern Upper Peninsula should prepare for hazardous travel through tonight as lake-effect snow transitions into a broader area of widespread snowfall ahead of Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday for Luce and Southern Schoolcraft Counties, including Newberry and Manistique. Total snow accumulations are forecast to reach 3 to 8 inches, with the highest totals expected near the Mackinac and Chippewa County borders.

Forecasters say lake-effect bands this evening will gradually expand into more uniform snowfall overnight, increasing both coverage and intensity. This shift will create slippery roads across the region and reduce visibility, particularly on rural highways and wooded corridors where drifting snow can accumulate quickly.

The NWS warns that travel may become very difficult at times, with hazardous conditions likely during both the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes. While snowfall rates may vary, even lighter periods of accumulation will contribute to slick pavement as temperatures remain below freezing.

Motorists are encouraged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution when driving, especially on untreated or secondary roads. Visibility may drop quickly in heavier bursts of snow, and drifting may develop overnight in open areas.

Conditions are expected to improve gradually after sunrise Tuesday as snowfall diminishes and winds ease.
